Mandatory GM Poll - Forum structure going forward

Post by Cleasby » Mon Jul 06, 2020 7:14 pm

Hi CSFL College and Pro GM’s,

For those GMs who are unaware the College CSFL league will no longer be using the forum going forward. This league will be hosted over a new platform and medium to be decided.

In line with this decision Rizzo and the admins have been discussing the role and purpose the forums play in the future world of modern sim leagues. We want to share our thinking and put the decision to you, the GM’s on what we do next as a sim league.

Clearly historically it has been the only method of building a community of GMs as well as interacting with simleague colleagues and sharing great articles and feature pieces.

However times have moved on no longer do GM’s want to sit and write long depth pieces or wait for a person to reply to a private message on a forum. Like most of the world we want instant communication and chat, detailed analysis to be quick and presented in an interactive manner for debate and instant reaction.

To support this new age there are so many ways in which we can build a community of dedicated friendly GM’s who enjoy playing DDSPF and DDSCF together, such as reddit/slack/discord to name a few.
.
All have different advantages and disadvantages, and because of this we are not sure what the best approach is, so we are asking you, our dedicated community of GM’s, the reason we do all the behind the scenes work, to make it a fun place to interact and laugh and cry over franchises winning or losing, what approach do you want us to take.

Please take the time to vote on the best approach and share your thoughts/feedback. It is important to note that whilst the college league will be moving to slack or discord full time, we have not made any decision with the pro league, we really want your feedback to help us determine how and where you want this CSFL to be run from.

Option 1 - CSFL pro league stays on the forum, College league goes to slack

Pros
- Minimal change from now.

Cons
- We place more messages on slack which would result in communications being saved on the slack channels for less time as we use the free Slack model.
- We are still stuck with a rigid forum structure with not much real GM activity occurring there, which could put off future GM’s who do not see the Slack comms straight away.

Option 2 - We move both league to Discord
Pros
- A Slack like interface but with a forum structure still.
- Can share images, pictures and data far more easily than the coding approach on the forums.
- Means we have one interface for chat, forum like discussions.
- Interface is better than a forum.
- Admins can deploy bots to manage new users to prevent spamming, which often occurs on forums.

Cons
Means a whole league move. Likely we would move the college league now as the pro league in the offseason.

Option 3 - We move both leagues to Slack

Pros
- One interface for everything.
- Can share images, pictures and data far more easily than the coding approach on the forums.
Means we have one interface for chat, forum like discussions.

Cons
- Slacks free model means we would lose data easily. So Admins would need to maintain core information away from the Slack site.
- Might be tricky for GMs to find information as data is lost even if pinned.

As I mentioned above we appreciate any feedback and whilst the College league will be moving off the forum we have made no decision on the pro league.
We want to do what is best for you all as the GM's who have helped make both leagues go from strength to strength!

The poll will stay up for about a week before we lock it.

Thanks.

Rizzo and the Admin team

Voted for no.1 as I find forum easiest to navigate.

I chose option 1 but partly out of my inexperience with Discord.

Moving to only slack for the pro league didn’t seem idle due to loss of messages and still seems to be decent activity on the forums. Although I admit I’m not the best and checking the forums as much as would like to and slack is much easier for daily communication.

If discord is well liked and solves some of the issues with slack, I’d be more than fine moving my vote to option 2.

Option 1 there should be some kind of pinned note for the slack though in both leagues so people visiting the site know where we mainly converse at
Tennessee Titans
2010 CSFL: 9-7
2011 CSFL: 13-3 (Super Bowl II Champion, MVP: V. Young)

Thanks to all who voted. We will stick with the forum and college has been moved to slack.
